Hello reader,
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost three years since I embarked on my PhD journey. Today, I want to share my experiences and emotions during this time. The journey of a PhD brings a mix of feelings and experiences, and there are three key points I would like to discuss in this blog post.
Deep Immersion and Expertise
One of the most rewarding aspects of pursuing a PhD is the deep immersion in your research area. As you progress, you develop a profound understanding of your subject and become an expert in your field. This immersion can be incredibly satisfying as you witness your own progress and gain confidence in your abilities.
During this journey, you acquire specialized skills, whether in research methodology, data analysis, technical proficiency, or conceptual and theoretical knowledge within your area of expertise. These skills become your strengths, enabling you to confidently present your research and construct logical arguments. Even your supervisor will recognize your growing competence.
Challenges and Persistence
The second key point is the importance of persistence in the face of challenges. Entering the third year of a PhD is often referred to as the mid-PhD blues. This period can be particularly challenging due to the pressure to produce significant results, dealing with setbacks, and the weight of the remaining work.
To manage these challenges, it’s crucial to be strategic. Personally, I find that having a structured approach to my work and a clear plan with achievable monthly goals helps navigate these tough times. Persistence, resilience, and adaptability are key traits needed to overcome setbacks and maintain motivation.
Completing Your Thesis and Planning for the Future
As you move into the final stages of your PhD, focusing on completing your thesis becomes paramount. The pressure to complete it will increase, but it’s important not to feel overwhelmed. Instead, focus on the process while keeping the end goal in mind. Your research will be at a more advanced stage, and you’ll be finalising experiments, analysing data, and preparing for your defence.
Additionally, it’s crucial to start thinking about your next steps after completing your PhD. Consider career options such as postdoctoral positions, academic roles, or industry positions. Start networking, publishing, and building a professional profile to support your future career. This is exactly what I am doing at the moment, alongside preparing my work for submission and networking within my field.
